Royal Jordanian Airlines is expanding its network by introducing a new route to the United States, commencing in March 2025. This strategic move marks the airline’s entry into a market recently vacated by United Airlines, enhancing connectivity between Jordan and the U.S.

Starting March 23, 2025, Royal Jordanian will operate two flights per week between Amman’s Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD). The 5,949-mile (5,170-nautical mile) route will be serviced by Boeing 787-8 aircraft, known for their efficiency and passenger comfort.

“We are excited to expand our network and provide enhanced connectivity between Jordan and the United States,” said Samer Majali, President and CEO of Royal Jordanian. “This route not only enhances our network connectivity but also underscores our dedication to fostering stronger ties between Jordan and the United States.”

The introduction of this route follows United Airlines’ decision to suspend its three-times-weekly service on the same route in August 2024. United had launched flights between Amman and Washington in May 2022 but discontinued the service due to safety concerns and low demand.

Royal Jordanian’s new service to Washington complements its existing nonstop U.S. flights to Chicago O’Hare International Airport, New York John F. Kennedy International Airport, and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport. This expansion aims to capture the growing demand for travel between these key cities.

According to Sabre Market Intelligence data, origin-destination (O&D) traffic between Washington and Amman reached 40,000 two-way passengers in 2023, reflecting a 6.5% increase compared with 2019. Analysis of United’s service from IAD to AMM revealed that approximately 78% of passengers traveling to Jordan’s capital originated from destinations beyond Washington. While Royal Jordanian’s new route will not extend connectivity beyond IAD, it will benefit from feeder traffic from the destinations it already serves from Amman.

The launch of flights to Washington comes as Royal Jordanian continues to strengthen its global presence. Despite the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, the airline has successfully introduced new routes to London Stansted and Manchester in England and resumed services to Berlin and Düsseldorf in Germany. These efforts demonstrate Royal Jordanian’s resilience and commitment to expanding its reach even amidst regional challenges.

In addition to network expansion, Royal Jordanian is advancing its fleet renewal plan. The airline has six Boeing 787-9s currently on order, which will effectively double its widebody capacity. Over the past year, Royal Jordanian has also taken delivery of five Embraer E2s from a batch of eight on order, further enhancing its operational flexibility and efficiency.

Royal Jordanian’s decision to maintain and expand its service to Washington Dulles International Airport highlights the airline’s strategic focus on key international markets. By filling the void left by United Airlines, Royal Jordanian aims to provide reliable and high-quality service to passengers traveling between Jordan and the United States.
