Ryanair Holdings has announced a £40 million ($53.5 million) investment to expand its maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility at Glasgow Prestwick Airport, reinforcing its long-term commitment to in-house engineering capabilities.

The expansion, unveiled on March 20, 2026, comes just days after the airline opened its largest MRO center to date at Madrid Barajas, highlighting a broader strategy to strengthen maintenance capacity across its European network. At Prestwick, Ryanair will construct a new 11,938-square-meter hangar featuring four additional maintenance bays, along with expanded component workshops.

Once completed, the development will increase the total number of bays at the site to ten, making Prestwick the airline’s largest heavy maintenance facility. The expanded capacity is expected to support Ryanair’s growing fleet and enable more maintenance work to be carried out internally, reducing reliance on third-party providers and improving operational efficiency.

The project is also set to deliver a significant boost to local employment, with approximately 450 new jobs expected to be created. These will include around 60 apprenticeship positions, reflecting Ryanair’s focus on developing technical skills and building a pipeline of future aviation engineers.

Prestwick has become a key engineering hub for Ryanair in recent years. In October 2024, the airline launched an engineering training academy at the airport, further strengthening its workforce development efforts and supporting long-term growth in maintenance operations.

Industry analysts note that increased investment in MRO infrastructure is a strategic priority for airlines seeking greater control over costs and fleet reliability. By expanding in-house capabilities, carriers can better manage maintenance schedules, reduce turnaround times, and respond more quickly to operational demands.

Ryanair’s continued investment in facilities such as Prestwick and Madrid reflects the scale of its operations and its focus on maintaining high aircraft utilization. As the airline continues to expand its network and fleet, enhanced maintenance capacity will play a critical role in sustaining performance and minimizing disruptions.

The Prestwick expansion underscores Ryanair’s broader commitment to operational resilience, workforce development, and long-term growth within the European aviation sector.
