Samoa Airways Welcomes First Refurbished Twin Otter After Overhaul

Samoa Airways has officially welcomed its first refurbished Twin Otter back to its fleet following an extensive WST10 million tala (USD3.6 million) overhaul. The 39.6-year-old DHC-6-300, registered 5W-FAW, was greeted by the acting prime minister of Samoa, Tuala Tevaga Iosefo Ponifasio, on March 14, 2025, at Apia Faleolo Airport.

The aircraft is the first of three aging Twin Otters that Samoa Airways has committed to refurbishing as part of its fleet upgrade. The overhaul was carried out by Unity Aviation Canada, with 5W-FAW being the first to undergo extensive work, which initially was expected to take seven months and cost WST7 million (USD2.5 million). However, after a detailed inspection in Canada, additional parts and repairs were needed, leading to a 43% cost overrun and a total project duration of nine months.

The refurbishment included a new paint job, a redesigned interior, and a complete engine overhaul. Acting Prime Minister Ponifasio explained that the extra work was necessary to meet safety and performance standards. The overhaul was funded entirely through Samoa Airways’ own revenues.

Looking ahead, the airline plans to overhaul its second Twin Otter, 5W-FAY, later this year, with the third, 5W-STF, slated for refurbishment in 2026. These aircraft are primarily used on domestic routes within American Samoa, including between Apia Fagali’i and Pago Pago.
