Sarawak Delays MASwings Takeover to Q1 2025
Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg has deferred the state’s acquisition of MASwings, a regional carrier under Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), to the first quarter of 2025. Initially aiming to finalize the deal by December 2024, the delay stems from the need for a third-party valuation to reconcile differing asset valuations between Sarawak’s government and MAG.
“We have an in-principle agreement, but the asset valuation remains unresolved,” the premier said. “A third-party assessment will determine the value of MASwings’ assets, and the takeover will proceed in Q1 2025.”
The acquisition aligns with Abang Johari’s vision of establishing a Sarawak-based scheduled passenger airline. Initially considering transforming Hornbill Skyways, a state-owned general aviation operator, the plan shifted to acquiring MASwings. The regional carrier operates ATR72-500s and DHC-6-400s, serving extensive routes in Sarawak.
For nearly 18 months, negotiations among the Sarawak government, Malaysian federal government, MAG, and Khazanah Nasional, MAG’s sovereign wealth fund owner, have seen limited progress. Despite missed deadlines, the premier remains committed to completing the deal.
Post-acquisition, Sarawak plans to expand MASwings beyond regional operations, introducing jet aircraft for a broader pan-Asian network. Premier Abang Johari has even hinted at long-haul destinations such as Frankfurt International, signaling ambitious growth plans.
This strategic move could enhance Sarawak’s connectivity and economic development, positioning the state as a key player in the regional and international aviation markets.
