SAS Passengers Stranded 22 Hours After Emergency Landing in Remote Canadian Base

Passengers on SAS Scandinavian Airlines flight SK910 from Newark to Copenhagen endured a 22‑hour delay after their Airbus A330‑300 made an unscheduled landing at Goose Bay Airport, a remote Canadian military base in Labrador.

The flight departed Newark Liberty International Airport at 5:47 p.m. Eastern time on Sunday (Nov. 16), but after three and a half hours in the air diverted northwest, landing safely at Goose Bay at 9:15 p.m. local time (AST), according to FlightAware data. The exact reason for SAS flight SK910’s diversion to Goose Bay has not been officially confirmed, but available reports suggest it was due to a technical issue onboard the Airbus A330‑300.

Goose Bay: A Common Diversion Point

Goose Bay is one of the last airports before transatlantic crossings and is frequently used as a diversion site. However, its limited passenger facilities often leave travelers stranded until replacement aircraft or crews can arrive. The town itself has a population of just 8,000, and in a similar 2023 incident, Delta passengers were housed overnight in military barracks.

Rescue Flight Dispatched

On Monday morning, SAS dispatched an unloaded Airbus A330 from Copenhagen, operating as flight SK9201, to retrieve the stranded travelers. The aircraft departed Copenhagen at 10:55 a.m. local time and landed in Goose Bay just after midday, according to Flightradar24.

“A presumably very light SAS A330 has been scrambled to fly to Goose Bay to pick up stranded passengers,” Flightradar24 posted on X.

The rescue plane departed Goose Bay at 7:15 p.m. local time and landed in Copenhagen around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, meaning passengers arrived 22 hours late to their destination.

As of 5 a.m. ET Tuesday Nov. 18, the original SK910 aircraft remained grounded in Goose Bay.
