SAS Scandinavian Airlines to Begin Transition to SkyTeam in 2024

SAS Scandinavian Airlines is set to initiate the process of leaving Star Alliance and joining SkyTeam in the spring of 2024, according to Chief Executive Anko van der Werff. The move comes as the airline progresses towards concluding its Chapter 11 restructuring.

Van der Werff mentioned during a Wings Club event that once there is confirmation of SAS exiting the restructuring process, the transition from Star Alliance will commence. The airline aims to manage the transition seamlessly, minimizing disruptions for passengers.

This strategic shift is associated with Air France-KLM’s planned investment in SAS, which will initially secure a 19.9% stake for the Franco-Dutch holding company in the Scandinavian carrier. While Air France was one of the founding members of SkyTeam in 2000, KLM joined four years later. In contrast, SAS played a pivotal role in establishing Star Alliance in 1997.

The move to SkyTeam reflects SAS’s alignment with its new shareholder’s alliance, emphasizing a strategic realignment within the global aviation network.
