Saurya Airlines Awaits AOC Reissue After Crash Suspension
Saurya Airlines (Kathmandu) is preparing to resume operations following a six-month suspension of its air operator’s certificate (AOC) after a fatal crash. The airline’s chairman, Dipak Pokharel, told Business Age newspaper that the necessary documents have been submitted to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) for approval.
CAAN has acknowledged receipt of the documentation but has not yet made a decision. Spokesperson Gyanendra Bhul stated that CAAN is assessing whether Saurya Airlines meets staffing and airworthiness requirements for the AOC reissuance.
Saurya Airlines halted operations after a CRJ200ER crashed during takeoff from Kathmandu on July 24, 2024, resulting in 18 fatalities. The airline’s fleet is now reduced to two CRJ200s, with only one operational.
Pokharel noted that the airline has taken significant steps to rebuild, including hiring technical staff from operators in Nepal and India and onboarding five captains and five first officers. Salaries for employees have been fully paid, supported by India’s Kuber Group, which owns a 49% stake in the airline.
The chairman added that Saurya Airlines plans to replace its Bombardier CRJ fleet with ATR72-600s, as part of a long-term strategy. Kuber Group is expected to provide financial backing for this fleet transition.
Saurya Airlines is optimistic about receiving CAAN approval soon, paving the way to relaunch services and rebuild passenger confidence.
