Scandinavian Airlines Expands Codeshare for Global Connectivity

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), the flag carrier of Scandinavia, has announced a significant expansion of its global network by extending its existing codeshare agreement with Air France-KLM. This development unlocks a host of new travel opportunities for SAS passengers, further enhancing connectivity and convenience across continents. For the first time ever, travelers can now book flights with SAS to reach exciting destinations in Brazil and South Africa, marking a major milestone for the carrier.

Under the new arrangement, SAS passengers will be able to fly to Fortaleza and Salvador de Bahia in Brazil—two vibrant cities renowned for their cultural heritage and stunning coastal scenery. In addition, the expansion now includes direct connections to Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa, opening up new avenues for business and leisure travel. These new destinations join a growing list of codeshare routes that already span Europe and other international markets.

“Our partnership with Air France-KLM continues to unlock new opportunities for our travelers, and we are thrilled to now offer our customers a trip to Fortaleza and Salvador de Bahia for the first time ever,” said Paul Verhagen, Chief Commercial Officer at SAS. “This is just the beginning – our list of codeshare destinations will continue to grow, enhancing connectivity and convenience for both SAS’ and our partners’ customers.” Verhagen’s remarks underscore the strategic importance of the codeshare expansion in meeting the evolving needs of modern travelers.

This initiative builds on SAS’s established codeshare relationships with Air France and KLM in Europe, as well as their joint operations to and from Tokyo. The new expansion is a key component of SAS’s broader strategy to extend its network beyond traditional markets. In April 2024, SAS further bolstered its global ambitions by signing an Alliance Adherence Agreement with SkyTeam Alliance, positioning the airline as a key partner in one of the world’s largest airline alliances.

With the recent network expansion, SAS now offers enhanced connectivity from and to Scandinavia, one of the world’s busiest hubs for international travel. The updated route map includes not only the new Brazilian and South African destinations but also additional connections to major cities in Asia such as Osaka and Bangkok. Furthermore, SAS continues to serve popular Brazilian hubs like Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, providing passengers with an extensive choice of travel itineraries that cater to a wide range of interests.

For travelers, the expanded codeshare agreement means increased flexibility when planning journeys, with a more comprehensive schedule of flights that can seamlessly connect through Air France-KLM’s network. This initiative is expected to benefit business travelers seeking efficient international routes, as well as leisure passengers eager to explore new cultural destinations.

As SAS continues to innovate and expand its service offerings, the codeshare expansion with Air France-KLM represents a vital step in its mission to connect people across the globe. By forging stronger partnerships and broadening its network, SAS is not only reinforcing its position as a leading European carrier but also ensuring that passengers enjoy a richer and more diverse travel experience.

This bold move by SAS illustrates the airline’s commitment to growth and its dedication to adapting to the dynamic global aviation landscape. With new routes and enhanced connectivity, the future looks bright for travelers looking to explore the world with Scandinavian Airlines.
