Scoot Revamps Routes with Vienna Launch, Iloilo Debut
Singapore Airlines’ low-cost carrier, Scoot, is set to reshape its international network as part of an ongoing strategy to better match capacity with demand and optimize aircraft utilization. In a bold move to streamline its European offerings and expand its presence in Southeast Asia, the airline has announced the launch of direct flights to Vienna and Iloilo City, while discontinuing services to Berlin and Jinan.
Beginning June 3, Scoot will introduce its new Vienna service, operating three times a week with Boeing 787-8 aircraft configured with 329 seats across two cabin classes. This addition positions Scoot as the sole operator of nonstop flights between Singapore and Vienna. The introduction of this route marks a significant step for the airline, as it broadens its reach within Europe while catering to an increasing demand for direct connections between Asia and Central Europe. With its modern fleet and competitive pricing, the new Vienna service is expected to attract both leisure and business travelers seeking a convenient link between Singapore and the European capital.
In parallel with its European network revamp, Scoot is also expanding its reach in Southeast Asia. On April 14, the carrier will commence flights to Iloilo City in the Philippines, initially offering two roundtrips per week on Embraer E190-E2 aircraft. This new destination is strategically important as it adds to the airline’s growing list of Philippine routes, already including Angeles/Mabalacat, Cebu, Davao, and Manila. From June, the frequency for Iloilo City will increase to four weekly flights, reflecting strong market demand and the carrier’s commitment to enhancing connectivity in the region.
However, as Scoot continues to evolve, not all adjustments are additive. In a move designed to reallocate resources more efficiently, the airline will cease operations to Jinan, China, on February 28. Additionally, Scoot will withdraw its indirect service to Berlin, currently operated via Athens, on March 28. The Berlin discontinuation means that Berlin will no longer be connected with Singapore through Scoot, although travelers will still have the option to reach Singapore via other carriers. Furthermore, while direct Jinan-Singapore flights will be halted, this particular market will continue to be served by daily flights operated by Shandong Airlines, ensuring that connectivity between the two cities is maintained.
Scoot’s recent operational performance has been strong. In December 2024, the airline handled approximately 1.1 million passengers with a load factor of 89%, marking a year-on-year increase of 2.3%. This robust performance reflects growing customer confidence in the carrier as it adapts its network to meet evolving travel trends and regional market demands.
Looking ahead to the summer 2025 season, Scoot’s network will have a more focused European footprint, with Vienna and Athens standing as its only nonstop European routes. The recalibration of routes underscores the airline’s strategy to concentrate on high-demand, high-yield markets while optimizing its fleet and resources for better performance.
With these strategic adjustments, Scoot is not only strengthening its position in the competitive aviation market but also offering travelers expanded options and improved service. The new routes to Vienna and Iloilo City are poised to become key contributors to the airline’s growth, while the streamlined network will help Scoot focus on markets where it can deliver on its promise of affordable and efficient travel.
