Former five-term congressman Sean Duffy has been officially sworn in as the new United States Secretary of Transportation (DOT) after securing bipartisan support in a Senate vote. The ceremony took place on January 28, 2025, at the US Supreme Court, where Duffy was administered the oath by Justice Clarence Thomas in the presence of his family.

Duffy, who previously hosted a television show on Fox, expressed his gratitude and readiness to serve in his new role. Following the swearing-in ceremony, he tweeted, “I am honored and humbled to be officially sworn in as our country’s 20th Secretary of Transportation. I’m ready to advance President Trump’s agenda for safety and innovation in transportation. Thank you to Justice Thomas for administering the oath and spending time with our family.”

The confirmation of Sean Duffy as Secretary of Transportation marks his successful navigation through the final stages of the nomination process. His nomination was approved by the Senate with a decisive vote of 72 to 22. Earlier, on January 22, 2025, Duffy received unanimous support from the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, paving the way for his appointment to lead the DOT.

In his new capacity, Duffy has pledged to maintain the production cap on Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. This cap was instituted following the tragic Alaska Airlines incident on January 5, 2024, where a door plug detached from a plane midflight, raising significant safety concerns within the aviation industry.

The aviation sector is closely watching Duffy’s tenure to gauge his approach towards ongoing industry challenges. There is particular interest in whether he will continue the previous administration’s efforts to combat US airlines over “junk fees.” However, current indications suggest that such battles may not persist under his leadership.

“I am deeply honored by the trust placed in me by President Trump to lead this important Department and for the Senate in swiftly confirming my nomination. We are already hard at work executing the President’s vision to usher in a golden age of transportation by taking immediate action to remove government overreach and lower costs for hardworking Americans,” Duffy stated following his inauguration.

Duffy’s commitment to advancing President Trump’s transportation agenda focuses on enhancing safety protocols and fostering innovation within the industry. His background as a congressman and his public persona from hosting a television show provide him with a unique blend of political experience and public communication skills, which he aims to leverage in his new role.

The Department of Transportation under Duffy’s leadership is expected to prioritize initiatives that streamline transportation processes, reduce regulatory burdens, and promote technological advancements. By maintaining the Boeing 737 MAX production cap, Duffy signals a continued emphasis on aviation safety, ensuring that lessons from past incidents are integrated into future practices.

Duffy’s swearing-in ceremony at the US Supreme Court underscores the significance of his appointment and the collaborative effort between different branches of government in shaping the nation’s transportation policies. Justice Clarence Thomas’s role in administering the oath highlights the ceremonial importance of the position and the respect afforded to the new Secretary of Transportation.

As Sean Duffy embarks on his tenure as the 20th Secretary of Transportation, stakeholders across various transportation sectors—from aviation and automotive to public transit and infrastructure—anticipate his strategies and policies. His leadership is poised to influence the future trajectory of the US transportation landscape, balancing safety, efficiency, and innovation.
