Shanghai Airlines Launches New Route to Morocco

Shanghai Airlines is enhancing connectivity between China and North Africa with the introduction of a new one-stop flight to Morocco, set to commence later this month. Beginning January 19, the airline will expand its existing Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) to Marseille Provence Airport service by adding a stop in Casablanca’s Mohammed V International Airport. This new route will be serviced three times weekly using the advanced Boeing 787-9 aircraft, offering passengers a comfortable and efficient travel experience.

This expansion marks Shanghai Airlines’ inaugural service to Africa, positioning the carrier as a key player in bridging China with the North African region. The route approval was secured from the Civil Aviation Administration of China in the third quarter of 2024, allowing Shanghai Airlines to operate up to five weekly flights on the Shanghai-Marseille-Casablanca corridor. This strategic move not only broadens Shanghai Airlines’ global footprint but also strengthens trade and tourism links between China and Morocco.

Shanghai Airlines’ new route to Casablanca is the second direct connection between mainland China and Morocco, complementing Royal Air Maroc’s existing flights that operate between Casablanca and Beijing Daxing International Airport. This development provides travelers with more options and flexibility, enhancing the overall travel experience between these two regions.

The launch of this route follows the recent expansion efforts by Shanghai Airlines’ parent company, China Eastern Airlines, into North Africa. In December, China Eastern began its first nonstop passenger service to the region, connecting Shanghai Pudong International Airport with Cairo International Airport (CAI). The 5,198-mile (4,517-nm) Shanghai-PVG to Cairo-CAI route operates daily using the state-of-the-art Airbus A350-900 aircraft, directly competing with Star Alliance member EgyptAir’s bi-weekly Boeing 787-9 service.

With the addition of the Casablanca route, Shanghai Airlines significantly boosts the available travel options between mainland China and North Africa. Once operational, there will be approximately 28,100 two-way weekly seats available between China and North Africa. This represents a substantial year-on-year increase of 22%, and an impressive rise of nearly 20,000 weekly seats compared to 2019 levels. This surge in capacity highlights the growing demand for travel between these regions and Shanghai Airlines’ commitment to meeting this demand.

The new Shanghai-Marseille-Casablanca route is expected to facilitate not only passenger travel but also enhance business and cultural exchanges. Morocco serves as a strategic gateway to Africa, and improved air connectivity with China can lead to increased economic cooperation, tourism, and investment opportunities. Businesses will benefit from more efficient travel options, fostering stronger bilateral ties and opening up new avenues for collaboration.

Passengers traveling on the new route will benefit from Shanghai Airlines’ reputation for reliability and excellent service. The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner offers a superior in-flight experience with enhanced comfort, advanced entertainment systems, and improved fuel efficiency, making long-haul travel more enjoyable and sustainable.

Shanghai Airlines’ expansion into North Africa underscores the airline’s strategic vision to become a major international carrier. By establishing new routes and increasing flight frequencies, Shanghai Airlines is positioning itself to better serve the growing global travel market and meet the evolving needs of its passengers.

In summary, the launch of Shanghai Airlines’ new one-stop route to Morocco is a significant milestone in the airline’s growth strategy. It enhances connectivity between China and North Africa, providing passengers with more travel options and supporting economic and cultural exchanges. As Shanghai Airlines continues to expand its network, travelers can look forward to more destinations and improved services, reinforcing the airline’s role as a key facilitator of global connectivity.
