Silversea Reveals New Details About The Cormorant at 55 South: The Southernmost Hotel on Earth

Luxury cruise line Silversea has unveiled new details about its highly anticipated hotel in Puerto Williams, Chile, officially named The Cormorant at 55 South. Set to open for the 2025–2026 Antarctica cruise season, this 150-room property will become the southernmost hotel on Earth, serving as a luxurious launchpad for travelers embarking on Antarctic adventures.
Strategically located on Navarino Island at 55 degrees south latitude, The Cormorant at 55 South is more than just a hotel—it’s an immersive destination. The name pays tribute to both the geographic location and the cormorant, a significant bird to the indigenous Yahgan people. Known locally as “Lakutaia,” the cormorant symbolizes exploration and maritime heritage, aligning perfectly with Silversea’s spirit of adventure.
Silversea President Bert Hernandez says the hotel aims to reflect Puerto Williams’ rich cultural legacy and stunning natural surroundings. “The Cormorant at 55 South is a tribute to the rich culture, breathtaking natural beauty, and storied history of Puerto Williams, immersing guests in their destination before embarking on their journey to Antarctica,” he said.
The hotel will feature sweeping views of the Beagle Channel and surrounding Patagonian forests. Designed with comfort and elegance in mind, the rooms will incorporate expansive windows, warm wooden finishes, and locally crafted décor. Earth tones and artisan-made accents will provide guests with a deep sense of place while offering premium comfort.
“Every aspect of The Cormorant is thoughtfully designed with our guests in mind, ensuring a comfortable and uniquely Silversea experience,” Hernandez added. “Each room offers panoramic views of Patagonia, and the hotel creates a deep connection to the local community. Specially designed experiences will allow our guests to begin their expeditions sooner than ever, all in uncompromised comfort.”
The Cormorant will be used for both pre- and post-expedition stays, with a special focus on supporting itineraries like Silversea’s six-day “Antarctica Fly Cruise.” This itinerary enables guests to bypass the often-rough Drake Passage by flying directly to King George Island, maximizing comfort and expedition time.
In addition to the hotel reveal, Silversea is expanding its storytelling efforts with a new content series titled Stories by Silversea. The series aims to highlight the people, destinations, and experiences that define the brand. The first two episodes, Embrace the Unknown and A Legacy in the Making: Part 1, are now available, offering an inside look at the brand’s evolving vision.
With The Cormorant at 55 South, Silversea is setting a new standard in pre-expedition luxury, blending cultural authenticity with high-end comfort. As the 2025–2026 Antarctica season approaches, this innovative hotel will play a key role in transforming the way travelers experience the journey to the White Continent.
