Singapore Airlines to Retire Final Boeing 737-800 by October 2025

Singapore Airlines is preparing to retire its final Boeing 737-800, marking the end of an era for the narrowbody aircraft type within its fleet. The airline confirmed that the last remaining jet, registered 9V-MGN, will be withdrawn from active service by the end of October 2025, closing more than a decade of operations with the model.
The Boeing 737-800 first entered the Singapore Airlines Group through its former regional subsidiary SilkAir, which began operating the type in February 2014. When SilkAir merged into Singapore Airlines in May 2021, the 737-800s were transferred to the mainline carrier. At the time, 15 of the jets joined Singapore Airlines’ fleet, though the aircraft have gradually been phased out as newer Boeing 737-8s arrived.
Over the past three years, Singapore Airlines has been steadily replacing the 737-800s, which are more expensive to operate and offer fewer passenger amenities than the newer generation of aircraft. The 737-8 fleet features 10 fully reclining business class seats and 144 economy seats, along with in-flight Wi-Fi for all passengers, aligning with the airline’s goal of providing a consistent premium travel experience across its entire network.
Currently, Singapore Airlines operates 19 Boeing 737-8s, with seven more on order. The retirement of the last 737-800 coincides with the carrier’s strategy to streamline its short-haul operations around the more efficient MAX 8 variant.
Throughout October 2025, the final 737-800 has primarily flown short regional routes such as Singapore (SIN)–Penang (PEN), with occasional service to Kathmandu, Nepal. Once retired, the remaining aircraft in the series — 9V-MGK, 9V-MGL, 9V-MGM, and 9V-MGN — will be returned to their respective lessors.
The aircraft’s final flight is scheduled for October 26, 2025, coinciding with the last day of the IATA summer scheduling season. With its retirement, Singapore Airlines will complete its transition to an all-737-8 narrowbody fleet, reinforcing the carrier’s commitment to fleet modernization, passenger comfort, and operational efficiency.
