Textron Aviation celebrated the fifth anniversary of the Cessna C408 SkyCourier’s maiden flight on May 17, 2020, marking a significant milestone for the versatile light transport aircraft. Developed at Textron’s Wichita facility, the high-wing, twin-turboprop SkyCourier has proven its multi-role capabilities by serving air freight, passenger, humanitarian and special mission operators worldwide. Since earning Federal Aviation Administration certification in March 2022 and subsequent approvals in Europe, Australia and Canada, the SkyCourier has established itself as a cost-effective solution for short-field operations, remote runway access and combinations of cargo and passenger transport.

Powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-65SC engines and featuring McCauley C779 propellers with full-feathering and reversible pitch functionality, the SkyCourier achieves a maximum cruise speed exceeding 230 miles per hour and a range of up to 900 nautical miles. Its Garmin G1000 NXi avionics suite brings modern cockpit efficiency to operators, while single-point pressure refueling supports rapid turnarounds in austere environments. The freighter variant accommodates up to three LD3 containers and 6,000 pounds of payload, while the 19-seat passenger variant offers large windows, separate crew and entry doors and flexible cabin layouts.

Launch customer FedEx Express placed an initial order for 50 cargo aircraft with options for 50 more, underscoring the model’s strong appeal to express transportation and logistics companies. Beyond commercial operators, SkyCourier has been adopted by humanitarian agencies and special mission units requiring robust performance on unprepared airstrips. Optional gravel kits and combi conversions further enhance its adaptability for mixed passenger and cargo roles, allowing operators to tailor aircraft configurations to specific mission requirements.

To meet growing demand, Textron Aviation announced plans to expand its Wichita production flight test hangar by 52,000 square feet, adding six new bays on its East Wichita Campus. This investment will accelerate final assembly and flight test activities, ensuring timely deliveries and supporting an expanding global fleet. “The versatility of the Cessna SkyCourier enables operators to tackle diverse mission profiles and operate in some of the most challenging environments,” said Lannie O’Bannion, senior vice president of Sales and Marketing. “With two variants and conversion kits, the SkyCourier continues to deliver innovative solutions around the globe.”

Since its industry debut, over 100 SkyCourier airframes have been ordered, with operators in North America, Europe, Asia and Africa placing firm commitments. Aviation analysts highlight the aircraft’s attractive combination of low operating costs, high payload capability and regional range, making it an ideal platform for feeder routes, island services and remote outpost connectivity. As air cargo volumes rebound and commuter networks seek efficient replacement aircraft, the SkyCourier’s simple design and proven Pratt & Whitney reliability position it as a favored choice among turboprop transports.

Looking ahead, Textron Aviation expects SkyCourier deliveries to accelerate through 2025, with certification for gravel runway operations and additional special mission packages pending. The company continues to collaborate with global regulators to expand the aircraft’s type approvals, ensuring seamless entry into diverse markets. Maintenance, repair and overhaul support is also being ramped up through Textron’s global service centers, providing operators with comprehensive aftermarket care.

Five years after its first flight, the Cessna SkyCourier remains at the forefront of multi-role utility aviation. Its combination of performance, flexibility and economic efficiency has filled a critical gap in the market, delivering reliable service where few other aircraft can operate. As Textron Aviation scales production and broadens its customer base, the SkyCourier is set to play an increasingly vital role in connecting remote communities, supporting time-sensitive logistics and carrying passengers to destinations off the beaten path.
