SMBC Aviation Capital Orders 60 Airbus A320neo Aircraft
SMBC Aviation Capital, the world’s second-largest aircraft leasing firm, has placed a significant order for 60 Airbus A320neo family aircraft. While the financial details of the deal were not disclosed by SMBC, Nikkei Asia reported that the order’s value was around $3.4 billion, based on the market price of the A320neo aircraft.
This order brings SMBC’s cumulative order book for the A320neo and A321neo aircraft to 184, with deliveries scheduled through to 2031.
Owned by a consortium including Japan’s Sumitomo Corp and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, SMBC Aviation Capital manages or has orders in place for nearly 1,000 planes. The company reported a 75% increase in first-half profit to $236 million, attributing this performance to favorable conditions in the leasing sector and the ongoing recovery in global air travel.
According to SMBC CEO Peter Barrett, this transaction reflects the sustained global demand for technologically advanced, fuel-efficient aircraft like the A320neo.
