Southwest Airlines Cuts Free Checked Bags for Most Passengers

Southwest Airlines is ending its long-standing policy of offering two free checked bags for most passengers, marking a major shift in its customer-friendly approach. Starting May 28, 2025, only Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Members and Business Select fare passengers will continue receiving two free checked bags.
A-List Members and select travelers will get one free checked bag, while Rapid Rewards Credit Cardholders will receive a baggage credit. All other passengers must pay for checked bags, with size and weight restrictions still applicable. The airline says these changes aim to improve profitability and attract new customer segments.
“We have tremendous opportunity to meet customer needs, attract new travelers, and return to expected profitability,” Southwest Airlines CEO Bob Jordan stated.
Beyond baggage fees, Southwest is revising its loyalty program, increasing points for Business Select fares while reducing rewards for lower-tier tickets. A new Basic fare will cater to budget-conscious travelers, introducing assigned seating and extra legroom options.
Southwest is also expanding its distribution, with flights now bookable on Expedia. Additionally, flexibility for flight credits will be reduced, with credits expiring within a year from the purchase date.
Despite these changes, Southwest highlights its industry-leading performance, boasting the best on-time ranking for 2025 and a 98.3% completion rate for scheduled flights.
