On Oct. 26, Southwest Airlines unveiled its plan to bolster its fleet by ordering an additional 108 Boeing 737-7 Max aircraft. This decision not only aligns with Southwest’s ongoing fleet modernization initiative but also offers the airline greater flexibility for future expansion.

Bob Jordan, Southwest Airlines’ President & Chief Executive Officer, reflected on the long-standing relationship between Southwest and Boeing. “Our association with Boeing stretches over five decades. From our humble beginnings with just three Boeing 737 aircraft serving three cities, they have been an integral part of our journey. As we plan for the future, the efficiencies and cost benefits of maintaining a uniform fleet remain evident.”

Over the years, the 737 series has been pivotal in facilitating Southwest’s consistent growth trajectory. In total, Southwest’s order book now boasts over 500 commitments for the 737 MAX jets, with the latest order pushing the count beyond 300 for the 737-7 variant alone. Following certification, the new 737-7s will seamlessly integrate into Southwest’s exclusively Boeing 737 fleet.

Stan Deal, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, commented on Southwest’s decision: “Having the distinction of the world’s largest all-Boeing, all-737 fleet, Southwest’s reliance on the unmatched efficiency and reliability of the 737 MAX family is evident. The 737-7 is a cornerstone of Southwest’s fleet modernization vision, and it’s a privilege to continue being their trusted partner for future expansions.”

Boasting the longest range within its category, the 737-7 can travel up to 3,800 nautical miles and accommodate as many as 172 passengers. The 737 MAX’s enhanced environmental credentials mean it is more fuel-efficient than its predecessors. Furthermore, it’s designed to be quieter, thereby leaving a smaller noise imprint, marking a significant upgrade over older aircraft models.
