SpiceJet to Add Five Boeing 737s Ahead of Winter 2025
SpiceJet is set to boost its fleet with five additional Boeing 737 aircraft as the Indian low-cost carrier prepares for a strong Winter 2025 travel season. The airline confirmed the expansion on July 25, 2025, stating that the aircraft will join its operations under a lease agreement and are expected to be delivered by October.
“This strategic expansion is a step forward in enhancing our operational efficiency, route network, and overall customer experience,” a SpiceJet spokesperson said. The move aims to improve the airline’s ability to meet rising demand during the busy winter travel period, particularly on domestic and short-haul international routes.
According to a report by The Economic Times, the five aircraft are part of a damp lease agreement, which involves shared operational responsibilities between the lessor and the airline. This approach allows SpiceJet to quickly scale its capacity while managing operational costs and ensuring flexibility in aircraft deployment. The airline is also reportedly in talks with other lessors to further expand its fleet while awaiting deliveries of new aircraft.
Chief Business Officer Debojo Maharshi emphasized the importance of the expansion, stating, “This addition will significantly strengthen our fleet and enable us to deliver a superior flying experience to our passengers. We are actively exploring further fleet additions as we prepare for a robust winter schedule.”
Data from ch-aviation shows that SpiceJet currently operates an active fleet comprising three Boeing 737-700s, one 737 MAX 8, nine 737-800s, one 737-900ER, and six Dash 8 Q400 turboprops. The airline also has a substantial order backlog with Boeing for 129 737 MAX 8 aircraft, underscoring its long-term growth ambitions and commitment to fleet modernization.
The planned arrival of the five Boeing 737s comes at a pivotal time for SpiceJet, as it seeks to reclaim market share and strengthen its position in India’s competitive low-cost aviation sector. With demand for air travel in India and neighboring regions steadily rising, the additional aircraft will support the airline’s efforts to expand frequencies and launch new routes.
