SpiceJet to Reactivate 28 Aircraft in INR32.36 Billion Capital Plan
SpiceJet is gearing up for a significant fleet expansion as part of its strategy to attract investors for a planned capital infusion of INR32.36 billion (USD385.4 million). The airline intends to return 28 of its 36 grounded aircraft to service, effectively doubling its operational fleet size, reported ch-aviation.com.
In a recent presentation, SpiceJet outlined its plan to unground a substantial portion of its fleet. The airline aims to reactivate three Boeing 737-700s, two 737-700(BDSF)s, four 737-800s, three 737-900s, three 737-8s, and thirteen DHC-8-Q400s. However, the airline has not yet specified the timeline for resuming operations with these aircraft.
SpiceJet’s operational fleet has seen a dramatic reduction over the past few years. In 2020, the airline operated 94 aircraft, including seven wet-leases, thirty-one Q400s, and fifty-six Boeing planes. By June 30, 2024, this number had decreased to 28 aircraft, comprising eight wet-leases, five Q400s, and fifteen Boeing airframes.
Currently, SpiceJet’s active fleet includes 18 in-house aircraft: two 737-700s, two 737-8s, nine 737-800s, one 737-900ER, and four DHC-8-Q400s. Additionally, the airline operates five wet-leased aircraft, including two A320-200s from Sky Angkor Airlines and three 737-800s from BBN Airlines Indonesia.
SpiceJet has also placed an order for 129 Boeing 737-8s, signaling its long-term commitment to expanding and modernizing its fleet. This upcoming capital infusion is crucial for the airline as it aims to restore its operational capabilities and enhance its market presence.
The planned fleet expansion aligns with SpiceJet’s broader strategy to strengthen its position in the competitive aviation market and ensure a robust recovery from recent challenges. As the airline prepares to welcome more aircraft into its fleet, it is poised to significantly increase its operational capacity and improve service offerings for its passengers.
