Spirit Airlines Expands Savannah Routes Amid Recovery
After emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this year, US-based low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines is set to accelerate its expansion plans by launching a series of new routes from Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport. The move represents a significant step in the carrier’s post-bankruptcy recovery and network growth strategy, as it looks to tap into new markets and provide high-value travel options for its customers. With its expansion efforts now focused on Savannah, Spirit is aiming to capture the attention of travelers in the southeastern United States while contributing to the revitalization of its route map following a period of financial restructuring.
Spirit Airlines announced on April 8, 2025, that it would initiate daily, nonstop service between Savannah and Newark-Liberty International Airport starting August 14, 2025. In addition, the carrier will launch nonstop routes from Savannah to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Nashville International Airport on October 9, 2025, and a further nonstop service between Savannah and Detroit-Metropolitan Wayne County Airport beginning October 10, 2025. The Savannah-Newark service will operate daily using Boeing 737-800 aircraft, while flights to Fort Lauderdale will run four times per week and services to Nashville and Detroit will operate three times per week. This expansion makes Savannah the second market on Spirit’s Georgia route map, following its initial service at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which the carrier has been serving since 2006.
In a statement released by the airline, Spirit emphasized that the new services offer Savannah travelers an array of high-value options to explore new destinations, while also making it easier for visitors to experience the region’s renowned hospitality. John Kirby, Vice President of Network Planning at Spirit Airlines, expressed enthusiasm about the new routes, stating that the expansion will deliver unmatched value and additional travel choices for guests eager to visit exciting destinations along the East Coast and Midwest. He also highlighted Savannah’s appeal as a coastal gem with historic charm and a vibrant art scene, further strengthening the city’s position as an emerging travel hub.
The new routes from Savannah come on the heels of Spirit’s successful financial restructuring, which was finalized on March 12, 2025. The restructuring involved a consensual deleveraging transaction that converted approximately $795 million of funded debt into equity, alongside a $350 million equity investment from existing investors. This financial turnaround has not only enabled Spirit to stabilize its operations but has also provided the carrier with the necessary resources to pursue ambitious network expansion plans.
Greg Kelly, Executive Director of the Savannah Airport Commission, lauded Spirit’s decision to add Savannah to its route structure, stating that the new services are a strong addition to the local community and region. He expressed confidence in Spirit’s ability to succeed in the market and underscored the benefits that expanded connectivity will bring to Savannah and the broader Southeast.
Despite challenges, including recent engine maintenance issues affecting a portion of its fleet, Spirit continues to build its all-Airbus fleet with an order backlog that reflects its commitment to growth. With these new routes, Spirit Airlines is not only providing its customers with more choices and higher frequency options but is also reinforcing its recovery and setting the stage for long-term expansion in key domestic markets.
