Spirit Airlines Introduces Extra-Legroom Seats and Free Bags

Spirit Airlines is broadening its ultra-low-cost model to include premium options, unveiling extra-legroom seating and a two-free-checked-bags benefit for its co-branded credit card holders. The carrier, which emerged from bankruptcy protection in March, said the move is designed to capture more discretionary spending from higher-end leisure travelers while maintaining Spirit’s signature à la carte pricing.
Beginning in June, Spirit will retrofit more than 40 seats across seven rows at the front of its aircraft to offer 32-inch pitch—four inches more than standard seating. These extra-legroom seats will replace the airline’s former “Go Comfy” product, which only blocked a middle seat. In addition to increased legroom, passengers who purchase the new option will receive one complimentary carry-on bag, reserved overhead bin space, Priority Boarding, a complimentary snack and non-alcoholic beverage, and the ability to change or cancel flights without incurring fees.
Later in 2025, Spirit will launch a partnership with Bank of America to offer two free checked bags to customers who sign up for and use the airline’s new cobranded credit card. The benefit will roll out in the coming months, giving cardholders immediate value and potentially encouraging loyalty among frequent flyers who prefer all-inclusive fares.
“By adding more value and perks for our loyalty members at a time when others are taking away benefits, we’re reinforcing our commitment to customer choice,” said Rana Ghosh, Spirit’s senior vice president and chief commercial officer. Indeed, Spirit’s decision to introduce premium services comes as competitors have grown their upscale offerings—United Airlines is adding larger business-class suites and American Airlines will begin installing enclosed door-style cabins this summer—while budget carrier Southwest eliminated its longstanding “two bags fly free” policy earlier this year.
Spirit’s pivot reflects a broader industry trend toward hybrid fare models that combine low base prices with optional bundles of amenities. The airline’s extra-legroom seats and free-bags perk aim to strike a balance between ultra-low initial fares and the convenience of an all-inclusive ticket. By rolling out these upgrades fleetwide by July, Spirit hopes to maintain its cost-conscious appeal while attracting travelers who value comfort and predictability in their flight experience.
