Star Air (India) (S5), headquartered in Belgaum, has announced ambitious plans to expand its fleet and network in the coming months. CEO Simran Singh Tiwana revealed the airline’s strategic initiatives during a recent press briefing, highlighting growth, expansion, and consolidation as the core pillars of their strategy.

“As we enter our next phase, growth, expansion, and consolidation will be at the core of our strategy,” Tiwana stated. “By the end of this financial year, we aim to operate a fleet of 14 aircraft, consolidating our network with over 100 flights across our 23-station network to maximize efficiency, aircraft utilization, and service reliability.”

Star Air operates within India’s regional connectivity framework, specifically under the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, which focuses on enhancing connectivity to tier II and tier III cities. Currently, the airline boasts a fleet of nine Embraer aircraft, including five E145s and four E175s. These aircraft facilitate approximately 44 flights daily, connecting 22 destinations across India.

The airline’s specialization in tier II and tier III cities positions it as a key player in bridging connectivity gaps in less-served regions. Tiwana emphasized that Star Air has successfully commenced services on over 90% of all routes allocated to it by the Indian government through the UDAN scheme. This extensive coverage underscores the airline’s commitment to fostering regional connectivity and supporting economic growth in smaller cities.

In addition to expanding its fleet, Star Air is set to enter the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) business through a joint venture. This strategic move aims to establish an MRO facility focused on the line and major maintenance needs of business and regional jets. While specific details regarding investment and potential partners remain undisclosed, Tiwana mentioned that Star Air has already established an engineering subsidiary to oversee the MRO processes and has identified a suitable site for the facility. This venture is expected to enhance the airline’s operational efficiency and reduce dependency on third-party maintenance providers.

By the end of the current financial year, Star Air plans to increase its fleet from nine to 14 aircraft. This expansion will enable the airline to operate over 100 flights across its 23-station network, thereby maximizing aircraft utilization and improving service reliability. The addition of five new destinations this year, a mix of commercial and subsidized routes, will further strengthen Star Air’s presence in the regional aviation market.

Star Air’s growth strategy is closely aligned with India’s broader aviation goals under the UDAN scheme, which aims to make air travel more accessible and affordable for the general population. By focusing on regional connectivity, Star Air not only caters to the travel needs of underserved populations but also stimulates economic activities in smaller cities by improving access to major economic hubs.

The airline’s entry into the MRO sector signifies a significant diversification of its business operations. By developing in-house maintenance capabilities, Star Air aims to ensure higher standards of aircraft upkeep, reduce turnaround times, and achieve cost efficiencies. This strategic move is expected to position Star Air as a comprehensive aviation service provider, capable of handling both passenger and maintenance operations seamlessly.

As Star Air continues to expand its fleet and network, the airline is well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for regional air travel in India. The planned fleet growth and entry into the MRO business reflect the airline’s commitment to long-term sustainability and operational excellence.

Star Air’s strategic initiatives to grow its fleet, expand its network, and enter the MRO sector underscore its dedication to enhancing regional connectivity and operational efficiency. With a clear focus on tier II and tier III cities and a robust expansion plan, Star Air is poised to become a significant player in India’s regional aviation landscape, delivering reliable and efficient air travel solutions to its customers.
