Star of the Seas Embarks on Maiden Sea Trials
Royal Caribbean’s newest vessel, the Star of the Seas, ventured into open waters this week as it achieved a pivotal milestone in its construction. Departing the Meyer Turku shipyard in Turku, Finland, the Icon Class ship slipped quietly beneath the bow and into the sea, marking the start of an intensive 11-day program of sea trials. This first sailing will test every aspect of the vessel’s performance, from propulsion systems and navigation instruments to safety protocols and onboard amenities.
More than 2,000 engineers, naval architects, designers and navigation professionals have converged on the Star of the Seas to oversee the rigorous testing regime. The sea trials will carry the ship hundreds of miles into the Baltic Sea before it returns to Turku for the final phase of construction. Scheduled for an August maiden voyage from Port Canaveral, Florida, the Star of the Seas will inaugurate its service with week-long Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries. Passengers will be among the first to discover Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s private island retreat in The Bahamas. The ship’s more than 40 venues will span everything from innovative restaurants and casual cafés to lounges, bars and live performance stages.
Among its standout features, the ship will boast seven swimming pools, including a trio of adults-only oases and a sprawling family waterpark with record-breaking slides. Culinary offerings will range from upscale steakhouse experiences and sushi bars to neighborhood pizzerias and globally inspired buffets. Guests seeking thrills can test their skills on the tallest slide at sea or soar above the deck on the new Ultimate Abyss; those in search of serenity can retreat to a glass-backed solarium or indulge in spa treatments featuring locally sourced products.
As the Icon Class flagship approaches its debut, Royal Caribbean has emphasized the importance of these sea trials in delivering a seamless guest experience. The trials not only verify the ship’s technical readiness but also allow crew members to rehearse emergency drills, fine-tune service protocols and ensure that every detail performs flawlessly under real-world conditions.
