Strong Winds Disrupt Norwegian Epic Docking in Sicily

Passengers aboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Epic faced an unexpected delay in Catania, Italy, on May 30, 2025, when strong winds caused the ship to break free from its moorings. The incident occurred while the newly renovated cruise ship was docked in the Sicilian port during its 10-night round-trip sailing from Rome. One guest who was disembarking at the time fell into the water when the gangway was destabilized, prompting an immediate response from the onboard crew. The individual was quickly rescued and received medical attention for minor injuries before being taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.
The cruise line confirmed the incident in a statement, citing extreme weather conditions as the cause. The ship had separated from the pier during intense winds, temporarily halting both disembarkation and embarkation procedures. Norwegian Cruise Line paused all passenger movements until the weather improved and the vessel was able to safely re-dock. During the disruption, crew members remained with guests at the port to ensure their safety and provide assistance as needed.
Despite the setback, Norwegian Epic resumed its itinerary following the brief interruption. The ship is scheduled to continue its planned visits to popular Mediterranean destinations including Naples and Florence in Italy, as well as Cannes in France. Norwegian Cruise Line emphasized that the safety of its guests and crew remains its highest priority and commended the swift actions taken by staff to manage the unexpected situation.
The Norwegian Epic is one of the cruise line’s largest vessels and recently underwent significant renovations to enhance the onboard experience for guests.
