A new study from Upgraded Points shows that a clear majority of Americans prefer hotels over short-term rentals such as Airbnb and Vrbo when traveling for the holidays. According to the survey, 62 percent of travelers choose hotels, citing better amenities, fewer hassles, and greater pricing transparency.

Amenities ranked as the top reason for choosing hotels, with 73 percent of respondents highlighting services and facilities not typically offered by short-term rentals. Another 62 percent said they prefer hotels because there are no cleaning rules or surprise fees, while 52 percent pointed to easier booking and cancellation policies.

The study surveyed more than 2,000 US travelers and examined how price, convenience, and ethical considerations influence holiday lodging decisions. Factors such as housing affordability and community impact are increasingly shaping traveler preferences.

“Travelers are thinking beyond price this year,” said Keri Stooksbury, editor in chief at Upgraded Points. “Convenience, transparency, and even community impact are shaping where people stay for the holidays.”

Cost perceptions also favor hotels, with 64 percent of respondents saying hotels are cheaper for domestic travel and 76 percent believing they are more transparent about pricing and fees. More than 70 percent of travelers feel that short-term rentals contribute to rising housing costs in popular destinations, with concern highest among Gen Z and Millennials, where agreement reaches 75 percent.

Among travelers who still prefer short-term rentals, the appeal lies in space and flexibility. About 75 percent value the additional space and privacy, 68 percent appreciate access to kitchens and homestyle amenities, and 56 percent prefer short-term rentals when traveling with larger groups or families.
