Sunrise Airways, Haiti Agree To Restart Domestic Flights June 12

Sunrise Airways and the Haitian government have reached an agreement to restart domestic flight operations from Port-au-Prince beginning June 12, 2025, following months of suspension due to gang violence and instability in the capital.

The carrier will resume scheduled flights to Cap Haitien, Les Cayes, and Jérémie. As part of the restart, Sunrise Airways requested additional insurance protections to cover potential human casualties and material damages stemming from Haiti’s ongoing security challenges. The Haitian government will provide a USD 11 million supplemental financial guarantee, which would be activated if needed to cover any compensation beyond what the airline’s own insurance provides.

This additional coverage aims to ensure passenger and crew safety while providing financial reassurance for operations amid the volatile situation. The agreement allows the airline to cautiously resume its role as Haiti’s key domestic carrier while balancing the risks involved.

Sunrise Airways operates a fleet that includes one BAe Jetstream 32 and four Embraer E120 aircraft. The airline is also expanding its presence in the Caribbean through its subsidiaries Sunrise Dominicana, based in Santo Domingo, and Sunrise Airways Dominica, which plans to launch operations from Roseau Canefield in July 2025.

The resumption of domestic flights will restore critical air connectivity across Haiti, where road travel remains limited due to safety concerns. The government’s financial support highlights efforts to stabilize the country’s essential transportation infrastructure amid ongoing unrest.
