Suspect Arrested in Foiled Terror Plot to Hijack Australian Passenger Jet

Australian authorities have arrested a suspect accused of plotting to hijack a commercial passenger jet in what officials and aviation experts have described as a “bizarre” foiled terror plan. The alleged scheme aimed to seize control of an aircraft at an Australian airport and force it to fly to the Middle East, according to The Australian.
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) confirmed that a suspect is in custody following a lengthy investigation involving intelligence agencies. Officials said there is no ongoing threat to the public. “This matter is before the court, with open-source reporting on this individual’s court case in July 2025. Suppression orders remain in place,” the AFP said in a statement to NewsWire.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been briefed on the alleged plot, which investigators are probing for potential antisemitic motives. Reports suggest the suspect intended for the aircraft to make multiple refueling stops on its way to the Middle East.
Security has since been tightened at Australia’s major and regional airports, with the Department of Home Affairs meeting with airport owners and operators to review protocols.
Pilot David Oliver, speaking on Australia’s Sunrise program, called the alleged plot “quite bizarre” and stressed that modern aviation security makes such an attempt extremely difficult. “There are strict security protocols at airports and onboard aircraft. It would be difficult to gain access to the flight deck,” he said.
Health Minister Mark Butler added that “any report of a potential hijacking” sends “shivers down the spine,” underscoring the seriousness of the threat despite it being foiled.
The investigation remains ongoing under court suppression orders, with further details expected to emerge as proceedings continue.
