SWISS Unveils First A350-900 in Toulouse Assembly
The latest images of SWISS’ inaugural A350-900 are making headlines as the aircraft takes shape at the Airbus final assembly line in Toulouse, France. Released via a LinkedIn post by SWISS’ communications team, these first public images capture the aircraft’s tail proudly displaying the carrier’s distinctive national flag emblem—a symbol of Swiss pride and innovation in aviation.
This milestone marks a significant step in SWISS’ long-haul fleet renewal. The airline is set to receive a total of ten A350-900s between the summer of 2025 and 2031. These state-of-the-art aircraft are part of a larger 25-aircraft order placed by SWISS’ parent company, the Lufthansa Group, back in 2019. Initially, in 2022, SWISS announced a commitment to acquire five A350s to replace its aging A340-300s. This announcement was bolstered in December 2024 with the news that an additional five A350s would join the fleet, emphasizing the airline’s strategic move to modernize its long-haul operations.
The new A350-900s are designed with passenger comfort in mind. SWISS plans to configure these aircraft with a four-class cabin layout that includes three luxurious first class suites, 45 business class seats, 38 premium economy seats, and 156 economy class seats. This diverse cabin configuration is expected to enhance the flying experience for a broad spectrum of travelers—from discerning luxury passengers to those seeking cost-effective yet comfortable travel options.
In preparation for the introduction of these modern aircraft, SWISS has already taken proactive measures to ensure a seamless transition. The airline has commenced pilot training using a new full-flight simulator installed by Lufthansa Aviation Training Switzerland in Opfikon, near Zurich. This advanced simulator is tailored specifically for the A350, ensuring that SWISS pilots receive rigorous, hands-on training before the new jets enter service. More than 50 pilots are scheduled to undergo training in the SWISS A350 simulator during 2025, with an additional 90 pilots set to be trained from 2026 onwards as the airline ramps up its A350 fleet.
