Syria signs $250M deal to buy up to 10 Airbus A320s

Syria has signed a $250 million financing agreement with a Qatar-led consortium to purchase up to 10 Airbus A320 aircraft for Syrian Air, as part of a broader $4 billion redevelopment plan for Damascus International Airport. The first three jets are expected to be delivered by the end of August 2025.
This agreement is one component of a sweeping $14 billion investment package endorsed by Syria and international partners, marking the country’s most significant influx of foreign infrastructure capital since the easing of Western sanctions.
The Syrian Air fleet comprises the following aircraft, as of January 2025:
- Airbus A320-200: 9, with about 3 currently active.
- Airbus A340-300: 2, though they are not in active service.
- ATR 72‑500: 2, not currently active.
The airport redevelopment, led by Qatar’s UCC Holding alongside Turkish and U.S. firms, is planned under a five-stage build–operate–transfer (BOT) model. It aims to boost annual passenger capacity from 6 million in the first year to nearly 31 million at full maturity. Improvements include up to 32 gates, modern air-bridges, upgraded air navigation systems, and an expanded terminal complex reflecting international design standards.
UCC Holding chair Mohammad Moutaz Al-Khayyat described the project as a strategic bridge carrying Syria toward a future of recovery and prosperity.
