TAP Air Portugal Adds New US Routes for Summer 2025
TAP Air Portugal is set to expand its transatlantic network in the northern summer season of 2025, introducing new non-stop flights that connect key Portuguese gateways to major U.S. destinations. The airline will launch a direct route between Lisbon Airport (LIS) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), as well as a new service connecting Porto (OPO) with Boston (BOS). Additionally, TAP plans to incorporate a weekly stop in the Azores on one of its Lisbon–San Francisco (SFO) rotations, opening a new link between Terceira Island (TER) and the U.S. West Coast.
The new Lisbon–Los Angeles route is scheduled to begin on May 16, 2025. Initially operating on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, this service will add a fourth weekly flight on Saturdays as of May 26. Departures from Lisbon are set for 09:55, arriving in Los Angeles at 14:40 local time after a 12-hour, 45-minute journey spanning approximately 5,690 miles (9,104 km). Return flights will depart LAX at 16:40, touching down in Lisbon at midday the following day. This route marks a return to Los Angeles for TAP, which last served the city in 1990.
In addition to the Lisbon–LAX launch, TAP Air Portugal will introduce direct flights from Porto to Boston starting May 14, 2025. The four-times-weekly service (operating Mondays, Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays until late October) will depart Porto at 18:05 and land in Boston at 20:30 after covering roughly 3,144 miles (5,030 km) in seven hours and 25 minutes. Return flights will leave Boston at 23:00, arriving in Porto at 10:35 the following day. These flights will be operated with TAP’s Airbus A321LR aircraft, accommodating 168 passengers in a two-class cabin layout.
A further enhancement to TAP’s network involves the Azores archipelago. Beginning June 3, 2025, one of the weekly Airbus A330neo flights that normally runs between Lisbon and San Francisco will instead make a stopover at Lajes Airport on Terceira Island. From there, passengers can continue onwards to San Francisco, offering a convenient U.S. West Coast link directly from the Azores for the first time. The distance between Terceira and San Francisco measures about 4,918 miles (7,869 km).
All new long-haul services from Lisbon and Terceira will utilize TAP’s Airbus A330-900neo aircraft, known for their modern amenities, improved fuel efficiency, and comfortable two-class configuration (34 business class seats and 264 economy seats). By adding these routes, TAP expands upon an already robust U.S. network, which currently features service from Lisbon to New York (JFK), Newark (EWR), Boston (BOS), Miami (MIA), Washington (IAD), San Francisco (SFO), and Chicago (ORD), plus Porto to Newark.
“With these new routes, TAP further strengthens its privileged position in the transatlantic connection,” said Luís Rodrigues, President of TAP. “We are excited to link customers seeking the best air travel between Europe, the Americas, and Africa, while enhancing our network and enriching the travel experience for our passengers.”
