Travelers on the West Coast will soon have an exciting new option for reaching the lesser-visited Azores, a stunning Portuguese archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. TAP Air Portugal has announced a trio of new seasonal routes set to launch in the summer of 2025, including the very first nonstop flight from Northern California to the Azores, as well as new services out of Los Angeles and Boston.

Starting June 3 through August 26, 2025, TAP Air Portugal will operate a once-weekly flight every Tuesday from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Terceira’s Lajes Airport (TER). After touching down in Terceira, the same flight will continue onward to Lisbon, Portugal’s capital. On other days of the week, TAP already operates year-round nonstop flights between SFO and Lisbon, making it easier than ever for travelers to explore Portugal’s diverse attractions.

The Azores, located approximately 850 miles off Portugal’s coast, have seen a surge in popularity in recent years. These volcanic islands are known for their dramatic landscapes, eco-friendly accommodations, outdoor adventure opportunities, award-winning wines, and a farm-to-table culinary scene that delights food-loving explorers. Terceira, specifically, is famed for its network of lava caves, natural ocean pools, and the UNESCO World Heritage town of Angra do Heroísmo. Until now, most U.S. flights to the Azores have originated from East Coast gateways like New York and Boston, making the new West Coast connection a significant development for Northern California’s Azorean community and curious travelers alike.

In addition to the San Francisco–Terceira route, TAP Air Portugal is introducing two more seasonal routes for summer 2025. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which the airline previously served in 1989–1990, will soon offer direct flights to Lisbon. Service starts May 16, 2025, with three flights per week, increasing to four weekly flights by May 25. This new LAX–Lisbon route is scheduled to end on October 25, 2025. Early-bird fares, available through December 17, start at $679 round trip to Portugal and as low as $599 to other European destinations.

TAP Air Portugal will deploy wide-body Airbus A330-900neo aircraft on these long-haul routes. These planes feature 34 business-class seats and 96 “comfort seats” with extra legroom, ensuring a more pleasant in-flight experience during the nearly 13-hour westbound journey.

The third new route is from Boston to Porto, a gateway to Northern Portugal and the heart of the Douro Valley wine region. Starting May 14, 2025, TAP will offer four flights a week to Porto, running through October 25. This route, operated with a narrow-body Airbus A321LR, will feature introductory fares as low as $529 round trip if booked by December 17, 2024.

TAP currently serves seven U.S. gateways—New York, Newark, Boston, Miami, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, and Chicago—and is renowned for its generous stopover program, allowing travelers to spend time in Lisbon or Porto at discounted rates before continuing to other European destinations. With these new routes, TAP Air Portugal continues to expand its presence in the U.S. market, offering more ways for travelers to experience the rich culture, history, and natural wonders of Portugal and beyond.
