TAP Air Portugal Expands U.S. Routes with LAX and SFO Azores Flights

TAP Air Portugal is accelerating its North American expansion with the launch of new seasonal services and a strengthened U.S. presence. On June 3, the airline inaugurated a weekly seasonal flight from San Francisco (SFO) to Terceira in the Azores, operated with an Airbus A330neo through August 26, 2025. This marks TAP’s second route from SFO, complementing its existing service to Lisbon (LIS).

This follows TAP’s mid-May debut at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) with a 4X-weekly A330neo service to Lisbon, a route introduced after the airline observed growing one-stop traffic to Lisbon via SFO, Miami (MIA), and New York JFK. “We decided it was time to go there,” said TAP COO Mário Chaves, citing market demand for direct West Coast-Lisbon connections. The LAX route is scheduled through October 25, with potential to become year-round depending on market response.

Additionally, TAP launched 4X-weekly service from Boston (BOS) to Porto (OPO) in May using Airbus A321LR aircraft. Like LAX, the Boston-Porto route is currently seasonal but under review for year-round operation.

LAX became TAP’s 11th North American destination and 8th in the U.S. TAP’s North American network now includes: Boston, Chicago O’Hare, Miami, Montreal, Newark, New York JFK, Toronto Pearson, Washington Dulles, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Cancun.

TAP carried 1.59 million passengers between Portugal and North America in 2024, an 8.9% increase year-over-year—making the region its fastest-growing market. While no additional U.S. routes are expected in 2025, Chaves indicated that 2–3 more North American destinations could be added over the next few years.

However, TAP faces growth limitations at Lisbon due to capacity and environmental constraints. With a new Lisbon airport not expected until the mid-2030s, TAP is increasingly looking to expand international service via Porto, as seen with the Boston-OPO route.
