TAROM to Sell Last Airbus A318 as Part of Fleet Restructuring

Romania’s national airline, TAROM, is set to sell its last active Airbus A318 narrow-body aircraft, marking a significant transition as part of its ongoing restructuring process. The government-owned carrier plans to retire its sole remaining 18-year-old aircraft, registered as YR-ASA, which primarily operates on routes between Bucharest (OTP) and London (LHR) and Istanbul (IST), by the end of October 2024. This decision reflects TAROM’s strategy to streamline operations and modernize its fleet.

The Airbus A318, introduced to TAROM’s fleet in 2006, was one of four A318 aircraft acquired by the airline, alongside YR-ASB, YR-ASC, and YR-ASD. Reports from Aeroroutes indicate that TAROM has already secured a buyer for YR-ASA, which will be sold to 3Top Aviation Services Limited, a UK-based company specializing in end-of-life aircraft acquisitions. This company has previously confirmed the purchase of two other A318 aircraft from TAROM: YR-ASB and YR-ASC.

The decision to retire the A318 fleet is part of the compensatory measures associated with the €95.3 million in state aid received by TAROM. As part of its restructuring efforts, the airline is committed to reducing its fleet size from 18 aircraft to 14. Following the sale of the A318, TAROM will continue to operate a diversified fleet comprising four Boeing 737-700s, four Boeing 737-800s, two ATR 72-500s, and four ATR 72-600s. Additionally, the older Next Generation Boeing models are set to be replaced by leased Boeing 737-8 aircraft, anticipated to join the fleet in 2025.

Once the sale of YR-ASA is finalized, Air France will become the sole operator of the A318 in Europe, as TAROM was among the few European carriers operating this aircraft type. Currently, the French flag carrier operates six A318-100s, which are recognized as the smallest and least common variant within the A320 family.

TAROM’s strategic decisions underscore the airline’s commitment to modernization and operational efficiency as it navigates the challenges of the aviation industry. By focusing on a more streamlined fleet, TAROM aims to enhance its service offerings and maintain competitiveness in the evolving market landscape.
