In a significant move within the aviation industry, Tata Group is merging two of its low-cost carriers, Air India Express (IX) and AIX Connect (I5), formerly known as AirAsia India. This merger will usher in a new era of air travel as the two entities come together to create a unified brand, set to launch on October 18.

The integration plan encompasses various aspects of the airlines’ operations. It includes the implementation of a unified reservations system, the alignment of service offerings, and the consolidation of the website and agent portal. This consolidation aims to streamline the customer experience and enhance operational efficiency.

One of the most notable aspects of this merger is the fleet expansion. The current fleet, consisting of 23 A320s and 26 Boeing 737s, will be bolstered by an additional 50 Boeing 737 MAX planes within the next 15 months. This infusion of new aircraft will significantly expand the capabilities of the merged entity, enabling it to explore new destinations and increase the frequency of flights on existing routes.

The combined airline will operate approximately 2,700 weekly flights, with Air India Express currently accounting for about 700 of these flights across 44 global destinations. This expanded network will provide passengers with more options and increased connectivity.

This strategic merger is part of Tata Group’s ongoing efforts to consolidate its aviation business. Additionally, Tata Group has facilitated an interline partnership between Air India (AI) and Vistara (UK) and has plans for the eventual merger of AI and UK. These initiatives are positioning Tata Group as a major player in the competitive airline industry.

The merger of Air India Express and AIX Connect marks a significant milestone in the aviation sector, promising greater convenience and choice for travelers while strengthening Tata Group’s foothold in the ever-evolving aviation landscape.
