Thai AirAsia X is set to relocate all flight operations back to Bangkok Don Mueang Airport (DMK) starting October, shifting from its current base at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK).

The move aims to enhance connectivity within the broader AirAsia network, facilitating easier connections both domestically and internationally while providing more convenient access to central Bangkok for travelers.

Thai AirAsia X had previously operated exclusively from DMK until March 2020 when the pandemic prompted a temporary relocation to BKK. Following the resumption of flights in June 2022, operations were consolidated at BKK.

“This return to Don Mueang Airport marks a homecoming for Thai AirAsia X,” said CEO Tassapon Bijleveld. “We are rejoining the robust AirAsia network, which holds a significant domestic market share in Thailand and offers extensive international connectivity across Greater China, India, South Asia, ASEAN, and Japan, encompassing a total of 93 routes with 1,250 weekly flights.”

The transition is being coordinated closely with Airports of Thailand and the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand to ensure a smooth process. It impacts routes to key destinations such as Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo, Tokyo Narita, Seoul, Shanghai, and Sydney. Notably, Sydney flights will be temporarily suspended from August 1 to November 30 as part of the relocation, with reassurances of continued commitment to the Australian market.

“While the decision to temporarily suspend services is regrettable, it aims to pave the way for an improved schedule and passenger experience, aligning with our commitment to offering the best value fares to and from Australia,” the airline stated.

Thai AirAsia X presently operates a fleet of eight Airbus A330 aircraft, with plans to expand to 11 by the end of 2024. The airline anticipates receiving three to five new aircraft annually as part of its sustainable growth strategy.

Meanwhile, Thai AirAsia is gearing up to launch daily service between DMK and Phu Quoc, Vietnam, starting October 27, further bolstering its presence in the Southeast Asian market with a robust 77 weekly flights to Vietnam, including triple-daily service to Ho Chi Minh City.
