Thai Airways Explores Major Aircraft Order, Focusing on Boeing 787 Widebodies
Thai Airways International is reportedly in discussions with manufacturers and lessors for a substantial aircraft order, aiming to acquire up to 90 aircraft, with a strong emphasis on widebody planes. According to sources, the order may include a mix of firm orders, options, and purchase rights.
The prospective deal is anticipated to involve approximately 80 widebody aircraft obtained directly from manufacturers, and the airline is also exploring leasing a smaller number of narrowbody planes. While specific details remain confidential, insiders suggest that Thai Airways is considering around forty Boeing 787s as part of the order.
The move comes as Thai Airways makes a robust recovery from the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. With the resurgence of tourism in Thailand, the airline has posted four consecutive quarterly profits and is now poised to rebuild its fleet, aiming to surpass pre-pandemic levels.
During the Covid-related restructuring, Thai Airways streamlined its fleet, currently operating a mix of Airbus and Boeing aircraft, including A330s, A350s, 777s, and 787s.
As part of its interim strategy, the airline plans to lease an additional 23 aircraft by the end of 2025. This includes eight more A350-900s, two A330-300s, one 787-9, and twelve A321s. The carrier’s commitment to fleet expansion reflects its optimistic outlook on the industry’s recovery and the resurgence of air travel demand.
The potential aircraft order underscores Thai Airways’ commitment to growth and fleet modernization, aligning with the positive trajectory of the aviation industry in the post-pandemic era.
