Thai Airways to Lease Eight A321neo Jets from SMBC Aviation

Thai Airways International (TG, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi) has signed a lease agreement with SMBC Aviation Capital for eight Airbus A321neo aircraft as part of its fleet expansion strategy. The jets, sourced from SMBC’s Airbus orderbook, are scheduled for delivery in 2026 and 2027.
Currently, Thai Airways’ narrowbody fleet consists of twenty A320-200s, all previously operated by Thai Smile. In a September 2024 filing with the Stock Exchange of Thailand, the airline outlined plans to receive 32 A321-200Ns over the next five years to support its domestic and regional network. CEO Chai Eamsiri confirmed the A321neos would enhance short-haul and regional operations.
It remains unclear whether the new lease agreement with SMBC is part of the previously announced 32-aircraft order or an additional expansion. ch-aviation has reached out to Thai Airways for clarification.
As of December 31, 2024, SMBC Aviation Capital had 107 A320neo and 51 A321neo jets on order, according to Airbus order data. The ch-aviation fleet database shows that SMBC owns or manages 724 aircraft, including 103 A321neos.
This lease deal marks another step in Thai Airways’ modernization plan, ensuring the carrier remains competitive in the growing Southeast Asian aviation market. The A321neo’s fuel efficiency and enhanced range are expected to optimize regional operations and improve cost-effectiveness for the airline.
