Thai SmartLynx Secures Licence, Plans ACMI Launch in 2025

Thai SmartLynx Airlines (Bangkok Suvarnabhumi) has obtained its operator’s licence from the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT), paving the way for the start-up to receive its air operator’s certificate (AOC) by early 2025. Once operational, Thai SmartLynx will become Thailand’s sole provider of ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) capacity, targeting the country’s seasonal peaks and local operators experiencing capacity shortages during these periods.

The airline plans to launch its operations with an A320-200 aircraft and aims to offer airlines an alternative through aircraft leasing. This strategy provides flexibility during peak seasons by allowing airlines to expand dynamically without the financial burden of ownership. According to Martynas Grigas, a spokesperson for Thai SmartLynx, this model offers financial and operational flexibility, enabling airlines to adapt to changing market conditions without additional risk.

Thai SmartLynx will become Avia Solutions Group’s second airline based in Asia, following the launch of BBN Airlines Indonesia (7B, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) in late 2023. Avia Solutions Group has also acquired Australia’s Skytrans (QN, Cairns), which is in the process of securing its AOC in the Southwest Pacific. The group aims to expand its portfolio to approximately 20 AOCs by the first quarter of 2025 to cater to emerging ACMI markets globally.
