The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) has confirmed plans to purchase four Saab Gripen E/F multirole fighters powered by GE Aerospace’s F414-GE-39E engines under a government-to-government agreement with Sweden. The deal makes Thailand the first country in the Asia-Pacific region to acquire the advanced Gripen E/F variant with these engines, joining Brazil and Sweden in operating the latest version of Saab’s flagship fighter.

The acquisition is part of Thailand’s broader effort to modernize its combat fleet and replace aging aircraft. The Gripen E/F is equipped with cutting-edge avionics, an AESA radar and enhanced electronic warfare systems, offering improved survivability and operational range. The GE F414-GE-39E engines deliver increased thrust and fuel efficiency, enabling the fighter to carry more payload and operate in hotter climates typical of the region.

Industry analysts say the purchase signals Thailand’s intent to deepen defense ties with Sweden while boosting its own air power in Southeast Asia. The Gripen E/F is also compatible with a wide array of NATO-standard weapons, giving the RTAF greater flexibility in mission planning.

The RTAF already operates an earlier Gripen C/D fleet, which has been in service since 2011 at Surat Thani Air Base. Integrating the new E/F variant will allow for smoother training and logistics while significantly upgrading capability. Delivery schedules and contract details are expected to be finalized later this year, with the first aircraft likely arriving before the end of the decade as part of Thailand’s ongoing air defense modernization.
