A new analysis of U.S. Department of Transportation data from 2021 to 2024 reveals which U.S. airlines are most likely to mishandle baggage, including checked bags, wheelchairs, and scooters. The rankings are based on the number of mishandled reports per 1,000 items boarded.

The Best: Tenth on the list is Spirit Airlines, with 4.93 mishandled reports per 1,000 items—over 185,000 out of 37 million.

  • Delta Air Lines follows at 5.10 per 1,000, with more than 1.1 million mishandled items.
  • SkyWest Airlines ranks eighth with 5.28 per 1,000 and 439,000 incidents.
  • JetBlue Airways takes seventh at 5.67 per 1,000, mishandling over 250,000 bags
  • PSA Airlines, a regional carrier for American Airlines, ranks sixth at 6.06 per 1,000.
  • United Airlines comes in fifth at 6.43 per 1,000, with nearly a million mishandled bags out of 144 million.
  • Alaska Airlines is fourth at 6.69 per 1,000, mishandling over 400,000 bags.
  • Republic Airways ranks third with 7.01 per 1,000, followed by Envoy Air at 8.25 per 1,000.

The Worst: Topping the list is American Airlines, with 8.71 mishandled reports per 1,000 items—over 1.75 million incidents from more than 200 million items boarded.

Travel experts recommend acting quickly if your luggage goes missing. File a report before leaving baggage claim, use a distinctive suitcase, attach clear contact information, and consider a tracking device. These steps can improve recovery chances and reduce stress, especially when flying carriers with higher mishandling rates.
