The New BMW M5: A $110,500 Plug-In Hybrid Powerhouse Weighing as Much as a Bentley

BMW’s latest M5 is a marvel of modern automotive engineering, marking the 40th anniversary of the super-saloon with a bold step into the future. Priced at £110,500, the new M5 retains the classic twin-turbo V8 engine while embracing a plug-in hybrid system, adding complexity and weight but potentially expanding its appeal.

The vehicle’s aesthetics subtly evolve from its predecessors, expanding slightly in size but missing the exaggerated muscularity of rivals like the Audi RS6. Despite its understated looks—highlighted by illuminated kidney grilles—the M5 makes a statement with its comprehensive features, including optional carbon packs that reduce weight and enhance performance.

However, the inclusion of an 18.6kWh battery under the floor has pushed its weight to a hefty 2,435kg, comparable to a Bentley Flying Spur. This battery supports up to 43 miles of electric-only driving, a feature unlikely to be the main draw for buyers of this high-performance model. When combined with the V8, the system’s output soars to 717bhp and 1000Nm of torque, making it a powerhouse, albeit one that’s slightly slower than the previous M5 Competition due to its increased mass.

BMW’s new M5 can reach speeds of up to 155mph, or nearly 190mph with an optional upgrade, and offers an electric-only top speed of 87mph. It features all-wheel drive with adjustable settings, multi-stage stability control, rear-wheel steering, and adaptive suspension, showcasing BMW’s commitment to driving dynamics and versatility.

Inside, the M5 prioritizes comfort over extreme sportiness, with plush seating and extensive ambient lighting, addressing the preferences of buyers looking for luxury as well as performance. The hybrid system’s management is fully customizable via the touchscreen interface, providing a tailored driving experience.

With a charging time of just three and a half hours on a 7.4kW charger, the practical aspects of owning an electrified super-saloon are also highlighted, although many may choose to let the robust V8 engine charge the battery instead.

As BMW prepares to release an M5 Touring variant, the debate continues about whether this M5 is the most controversial yet. Its blend of high technology, significant weight, and hybrid capabilities certainly makes it one of the most ambitious.
