The Points Guy’s 2024 Best Airlines Ranking Reveals Top Performers in US Aviation

As the busy summer travel season kicks into high gear, The Points Guy (TPG) has released its annual rankings of the best airlines in the US, helping travelers make informed choices. Based on comprehensive data analysis from 2023, including information from airlines and the federal government, TPG evaluated airlines across four broad categories: reliability, experience, cost and reach, and loyalty.

For the sixth consecutive year, Delta Air Lines secured the top position, praised for its consistent performance across these categories, though it did face criticism for its affordability and changes to its SkyMiles program. Notably, Delta also received accolades from other esteemed entities such as The Wall Street Journal, JD Power, and Cirium this year.

Following Delta in the rankings were Alaska Airlines and United Airlines, each recognized for their strong performances in several key areas. Alaska Airlines stood out for its timeliness and customer satisfaction, while United excelled with its frequent flyer program and route network.

Interestingly, low-cost carrier Allegiant Air ranked highly in reliability, attributed to its low rates of cancellations and mishandled baggage and wheelchairs, even tying with Delta for zero involuntary bumps. However, its overall ranking was impacted by a poor delay rate and its no-frills business model, placing it seventh overall.

Meanwhile, Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines, other ultra-low-cost carriers (ULCCs), ranked at the bottom of the list, with Frontier maintaining its last-place position from the previous year. Despite their low ranks, these carriers are noted for moving in a more premium direction, with Frontier introducing “business” class-like seats and Spirit eliminating all change and cancel fees.

Middle-tier performers included American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Jetly Airways, and Hawaiian Airlines. These airlines showed little movement in their rankings from the previous year but continued to excel in specific areas. For example, Southwest was highlighted for its favorable baggage and change fee policies, while American was noted for its extensive route network.

TPG’s report reflects the airlines’ efforts to stabilize and recover from the disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The rankings not only highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each airline but also track trends such as customer satisfaction and operational efficiency.

As airlines strive to enhance their offerings and service, these rankings serve as a valuable tool for both consumers looking to book flights and industry stakeholders aiming to improve performance. The detailed insights provided by TPG help underscore the importance of maintaining high standards in reliability, customer service, and value in today’s competitive aviation market.
