The Top US and International Spring Break Travel Destinations
Where We’re Headed for Spring Break
Allianz Partners has revealed its annual list of the top 20 spring break destinations based on traveler demand. The award-winning travel insurance and assistance company looked at the flight itineraries of 4.1 million travelers’ trips of five to eight days in length for travel planned between February 18 and April 18, 2022, and found that spring break bookings for 2022 have increased by a monumental 134 percent over 2021 bookings. Allianz went a step further to reveal the top spring break vacation spots both home and abroad. Warm-weather destinations continue to dominate in 2022, with Florida, Mexico and the Caribbean garnering plenty of interest.
10. Tampa, Florida
Down three spots from last year, Tampa rounds out the domestic top 10 for 2022 based on Allianz’s latest data. While the Florida Gulf Coast setting hasn’t lost any of its allure, it appears that other destinations have emerged as COVID-19 restrictions have loosened across the country.
9. Salt Lake City, Utah
Out West, Salt Lake City is also down from 2021, falling one spot. However, the culture-rich destination boasting plentiful opportunities for adventure travel remains a favorite among spring break travelers. The tail-end of Utah ski season is an added bonus for visitors this time of year.
8. Fort Myers, Florida
One of the nation’s trendiest destinations continues to entice springtime travelers. Fort Myers offers warm weather and beaches, of course, but also art, history, museums, shopping and some of the best dining and nightlife in the state of Florida.
7. Miami, Florida
South Florida remains a coveted spring break getaway in 2022, and Miami has the attention of many. South Beach and its surrounding neighborhoods are as popular as ever as visitors look to pair their beach vacations with an exceptional atmosphere on display during events like the annual Ultra Music Festival.
6. New York, New York
The Big Apple has come a long way in one year as strict COVID-19 restrictions and requirements on locals and visitors alike pushed the destination out of the top 10 for spring break 2021. Now sitting as the sixth-most sought-after U.S. city for a pre-summer adventure, New York City is ready to wow not only first-time visitors but returning travelers who will be sure to discover something new in 2022.
5. Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Just north of the Magic City, Fort Lauderdale edges out Miami for one of the most in-demand spring break destinations in the U.S. this year. Just a short drive to South Beach, Fort Lauderdale boasts a major airport, gorgeous beaches and cheaper accommodations for travelers eyeing a more affordable escape to South Florida.
4. Los Angeles, California
Like its East Coast counterpart in NYC, Los Angeles is a big riser in 2022 as pandemic-related restrictions have been lifted, making it easier for out-of-state visitors to explore. L.A.’s star power and proximity to iconic attractions and amazing beaches don’t hurt either.
3. Las Vegas, Nevada
Las Vegas is back in a big way in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic as visitors will have access to everything Sin City has to offer, including the famous casinos, the celebrity chef-inspired restaurants and the headline-stealing shows.
2. Phoenix, Arizona
The Valley of the Sun is a hot ticket this time of year as spring breakers flock for its endless sunshine and balmy temperatures as well as its burgeoning foodie scene, world-class golf courses, soothing spa resorts and stellar hiking trails.
1. Orlando, Florida
A beloved destination for families, Orlando offers warm weather and theme parks in bunches, so it’s no surprise to see that it ranks as the number one U.S. destination for spring break travel yet again.
10. London, UK
The lone European destination to make Allianz’s international top 10 this year, the difference is that this year London is actually open to international travel. The U.K. capital is very much open to Americans, and flight options are aplenty this March.
9. Liberia, Costa Rica
Up one spot from 2021, Liberia is the most popular Central American destination for spring break travelers this year, based on Allianz’s data. About a three-and-a-half-hour drive from San Jose, the Guanacaste capital is rich in art, culture, history and nature and provides visitors convenient access to some of Costa Rica’s best beaches.
8. Providenciales, Turks and Caicos
For quintessential paradise, travelers can head to the blissful Caribbean islands of Turks and Caicos, specifically the island of Providenciales. White-sand beaches, mesmerizing coral reefs and pulse-pounding water sports are just a small sample of what this destination has to offer spring breakers.
7. Nassau, Bahamas
A popular cruise port, Nassau offers springtime travelers a convenient Caribbean experience, especially if traveling from South Florida. The Bahamian gem is up one spot from 2021 as more international travelers make their way to its mega-resorts and beaches.
6. Montego Bay, Jamaica
Jamaica was among the most effective tourist-friendly destinations at addressing the pandemic, establishing resilient corridors to keep locals and visitors safe in a matter of months. Montego Bay is just one of many beautiful stops on this Caribbean island, but its clear travelers are still in awe of it.
5. Aruba
The Caribbean’s happiest island is down just one spot from last year. While travelers considering a trip to this sun-drenched region may have more options in 2022, Aruba’s glorious climate, spectacular beaches and luxe resorts and nightlife help separate it from the pack.
4. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic continues to be one of the most easily accessed overseas destinations two years into the COVID-19 pandemic as visitors won’t require proof of vaccination or a negative test result to gain entry.
3. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Allianz’s international top three remains unchanged from 2021. Once again, Mexico dominates, with the scenic, artsy and LGBTQ-friendly beachside destination of Puerto Vallarta ranking third for spring break 2022.
2. San Jose del Cabo, Mexico
The Mexican Pacific resort city of San Jose del Cabo continues to offer travelers coveted coastlines, history and luxury in bunches so it’s no shock to see it remain in such high demand. Just a short flight from America’s West Coast, Cabo has all the makings of a memorable spring break vacation.
1. Cancun, Mexico
Like Orlando domestically, Cancun remains firmly atop the throne when it comes to the most sought-after international destination for a spring break trip. The jewel of the Mexican Caribbean continues to boast the infrastructure, accessibility and affordability thanks to its omnipresent all-inclusive resorts that many other overseas destinations can’t compete with.
