Your Takeoff To-Do List
Whether you’re taking an overnight business trip or flying halfway around the world for the vacation of your dreams, flying is a better experience when you know what to expect. Travel looks a little different in the time of COVID-19 but passengers can ensure a safe and smooth experience at the airport and in the sky by following a handful of easy-to-implement tips.

Know Your Destination’s COVID-19 Restrictions
Be sure to stay up to date on the latest COVID-19 restrictions and requirements in your destination so you don’t come to the airport unprepared. In some cases, proof of vaccination or a negative test result may be required. You can use this helpful COVID Travel Map tool to find out the latest restrictions in your destination.

Mask Up
The federal mask mandate for air travel remains in effect so passengers are required to wear a mask covering both their mouth and nose inside the airport and on their flight for the time being.

Keep Your Hands Clean
Travelers should wash and sanitize their hands after coming into contact with common areas and items such as check-in kiosks, ticket counters and TSA bins. Experts advise using soap and water or a minimum 60 percent alcohol-based disinfectant when traveling.

Avoid Peak Travel Times
For travelers who want to limit their potential exposure to COVID-19, it’s wise to travel at off-peak times. Fridays and Sundays tend to be the busiest and most expensive days for air travel. Additionally, passengers with flexibility can avoid the big holidays and target other dates to reach and return from their destination.

Check Your Flight Status From Home
Passengers are encouraged to always check their flight status with their airline prior to arriving at the airport to avoid having to linger for an extended period of time due to an unexpected delay.

Enroll in TSA PreCheck
Travelers can save themselves time and stress at the airport by enrolling in TSA PreCheck for just $85 for five years. Being PreCheck approved means getting through the checkpoint without having to remove your shoes, belt, laptop, liquids or light jacket. According to TSA, in January 2022, 97 percent of TSA PreCheck passengers waited less than 5 minutes to get through security.

Download the MyTSA App
If you have room for another app on your phone, be sure to download the MyTSA app to stay updated on the latest flight delays and security wait times at your airport and quickly search to find out what items you can and can’t travel with.

Work With a Travel Advisor
Working with an experienced travel advisor can save you time and money as they can often find you affordable flights or package your trip to keep your budget intact. These travel professionals can also get you out of a sticky situation in the event that your flight is delayed or unexpectedly canceled at the last minute.

Pack Plenty of Patience
Enhanced health and safety protocols, staffing shortages and a spike in demand for travel of late have all complicated air travel in some cases. Your favorite spot for a pre-flight drink may be closed or your flight may be delayed while your airline awaits a backup crew member. These things happen. Therefore, travelers should always head to the airport with a good mindset and be prepared to exercise patience if impacted by factors outside of their control.
