Tragic Plane Crash in Sudan: 9 Killed, Including 4 Military Personnel
On July 24, 2023, a civilian Antonov plane crashed at Port Sudan Airport (PZU), claiming the lives of nine people, four of whom were military personnel. The Sudanese army reported that the crash was a result of a technical failure. Miraculously, a female child survived the incident.
The accident took place amidst heightened tensions in the region, with the crash occurring on the 100th day of fighting between government forces and the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group. Port Sudan Airport, situated on the east coast by the Red Sea, is now the only functional airport in the country after Khartoum International Airport (KRT) in central Sudan was affected by the conflict earlier in April 2023.
During the initial two weeks of fighting, the Khartoum International Airport saw several aircraft being caught in the crossfire. A Saudia A330-300 was struck by gunfire while preparing to depart for Riyadh, and a Boeing 737-800 operated by Ukrainian airline SkyUp also suffered extensive damage.
This tragedy highlights the importance of addressing the ongoing conflicts in the region and ensuring the safety of civilian air travel. Our thoughts are with the victims’ families and loved ones during this difficult time.
