Transavia Retro A321neo Celebrates 60 Years
Dutch leisure airline Transavia is set to mark its 60th anniversary with a unique celebration that blends heritage with modern innovation. The carrier will unveil a specially designed Airbus A321neo sporting a retro jet livery that pays homage to the airline’s early days. This distinctive design, inspired by the liveries seen on the carrier’s early Boeing 737s and Sud Aviation Caravelles, will help commemorate the milestone anniversary scheduled for October 21, 2025, and is expected to carry its first passengers during the summer season later this year.
The retro livery is a revival of a design originally created by Dutch designer Thijs Postma in 1966. Featuring a bold green window cheatline and tail, the design is accentuated by a large black ‘T’ on the forward fuselage with the words “Transavia Holland” prominently displayed above the window line. This vintage look captures the spirit and character of the early years of Transavia, when the airline first began connecting Amsterdam to key European destinations using a Douglas DC-6 on its inaugural service in November 1966. The new paint scheme has generated considerable buzz on social media, with several images now circulating online. These photos, taken at Airbus’ Hamburg-Finkenwerder (XFW) assembly plant, show the aircraft in the process of receiving its retro makeover, with the green window design and black ‘T’ clearly visible. Notably, the tail of the aircraft has already been painted, as is customary for Airbus models where the tail assembly is prefabricated and painted separately before being attached.
Adding a modern twist to the throwback design, Transavia has incorporated a subtle yet thoughtful detail on the inside of the sharklets. Passengers will be able to see the retro style reflected in the raised wing tips from their seats, offering an unexpected nod to the airline’s past while enjoying the comfort and technology of today’s aircraft. This creative detail is just one example of how Transavia is balancing tradition and innovation as it evolves its fleet.
The introduction of this retro A321neo comes at a time when Transavia is actively modernizing its fleet. The airline’s fleet renewal strategy has seen its Boeing 737-800s gradually replaced by new Airbus narrowbody aircraft. Its ninth Airbus A321neo – separate from the retro aircraft – is scheduled to arrive at Amsterdam-Schiphol on April 5, 2025. By the end of 2025, Transavia expects to operate a fleet comprising fourteen Airbus A321neos alongside 40 Boeing 737-800s. All of Transavia’s new A321neos will be configured in a single-class layout with 232 seats and will be powered by a pair of CFM International LEAP 1A-32 engines, ensuring both fuel efficiency and modern performance standards.
Currently, Transavia serves 147 routes to 94 destinations across 28 countries, maintaining bases at Amsterdam-Schiphol, Rotterdam-The Hague, and Eindhoven, with additional operations from Brussels Airport through its sister airline, Transavia France. With the launch of the retro A321neo, Transavia not only honors its rich aviation heritage but also reinforces its commitment to providing innovative and memorable travel experiences. As the airline prepares to celebrate six decades of service, the retro jet livery serves as a powerful reminder of its enduring legacy and its vision for the future.
