Self-sovereign identity (SSID), which gives individuals control over their personal data, is gaining traction in the travel industry. At The Phocuswright Conference, experts discussed the technology’s potential and challenges.

Shane O’Flaherty, Microsoft’s global director for travel and hospitality, emphasized the importance of data ownership. “We believe individuals should control their own data. If you own your data, you essentially become your own API, granting permissions to share information as needed,” he explained.

Vikas Bhola, CEO of NeoKe, presented a successful pilot project using SSID credentials in collaboration with IATA and Hong Kong and Narita airports. The project enabled two passengers to travel seamlessly without physical document checks, relying solely on biometric verification and digital wallets.

In Scotland, Condatis is leveraging SSID to personalize hotel stays by sharing real-time personal data with operators to tailor offers to individual preferences. “With a profile and preference-sharing system, travelers can receive relevant, timely offers,” said Gillian Jones, the company’s identity and access management lead.

The panel highlighted the importance of industry collaboration and standardizing processes to maximize SSID’s potential. Experts also discussed combining AI with SSID to enhance efficiency and improve travel experiences globally.
