Despite rising summer heat and growing travel interest in northern Europe, Mediterranean cities continue to dominate travelers’ hearts. In the latest Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards, readers voted Florence, Italy, as the top city in Europe, praising its small-town charm, Renaissance beauty, and unforgettable food.

Florence earned a Reader Score of 90.08, with voters raving about its architecture, warm hospitality, and culinary scene. One traveler recalled sipping cocktails at a rooftop bar at sunset, listening to church bells across the red-tile rooftops—a moment they ranked among their top travel memories.

Seville, Spain, claimed second place for its romantic atmosphere, vibrant lifestyle, and cultural richness. Granada followed closely in third, with readers highlighting its walkability, Moorish architecture, and free tapas culture. Istanbul and Rome rounded out the top five, celebrated for their layered histories, diverse cuisines, and architectural treasures.

Smaller and mid-size cities also stood out, with Siena, Lyon, and Porto praised for their authenticity, regional cuisine, and ease of exploration. Lyon was hailed as a culinary capital, while Porto charmed voters with its riverside walks and Douro Valley wines.

Readers emphasized that midsize destinations like Salzburg, Aix-en-Provence, and Cordoba offer a more immersive, relaxed European experience. Athens, though larger, earned points for its balance of ancient history, modern flair, and friendly neighborhoods.

From the artistic allure of Florence to the flamenco spirit of Seville, this year’s top European cities reflect a preference for rich culture, great food, and destinations that feel both historic and welcoming—without the overwhelming pace of major metropolises.
