Tripadvisor Fights Rise in Fake Reviews with AI Detection Tools

Tripadvisor removed or rejected over 2.7 million fraudulent reviews in 2024, marking a sharp increase from 2 million in 2023. The figures, published in its 2025 Transparency Report, highlight the growing challenge of fake content on the platform and Tripadvisor’s expanding efforts to combat review fraud.

Of the 31.1 million reviews submitted in 2024, approximately 4.2 million were reviewed by Tripadvisor moderators. The company uses a three-tiered moderation system: automated detection tools, human oversight, and community flagging. About 87.8% of reviews passed automated checks, while 7.3% were blocked by technology and 4.9% flagged by moderators.

The majority of fake reviews—54%—were linked to “review boosting,” where businesses or affiliates post positive reviews to inflate ratings. Tripadvisor issued warnings to around 9,000 businesses that were caught incentivizing such behavior. Member fraud, which includes individual users violating the site’s policies, made up just over 39% of fraudulent reviews. Vandalism and paid reviews accounted for 4.8% and 2.1%, respectively.

The rise of artificial intelligence has added new challenges. In 2024 alone, Tripadvisor removed 214,000 AI-generated reviews. According to Becky Foley, head of trust and safety, the platform is committed to ensuring travelers receive genuine insights. “Removing AI-generated content protects our users from generic, unhelpful reviews,” she said.

Despite the rising volume, Tripadvisor reported a 34% decrease in fake review attempts year-over-year, indicating its systems are working. Foley emphasized that while other companies are scaling back on moderation, Tripadvisor continues to prioritize trust, integrity, and consumer protection.
