Trump Warns China of Boeing Export Ban Amid Trade Tensions

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that his administration may impose export controls on Boeing aircraft parts in response to China’s expanded restrictions on rare earth mineral exports. Speaking at a White House press briefing on October 10, Trump said, “We have aeroplanes and aeroplane parts. They have a lot of Boeing planes, and they need parts.”

The warning follows Beijing’s move on October 9 to broaden its rare earth export controls, adding five new elements and tightening restrictions on semiconductor users. Trump called the action “shocking” and claimed it was unexpected. The escalation comes just weeks before Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are scheduled to meet at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea from October 31 to November 1, 2025.

The potential export curbs could significantly impact China’s aviation sector, which relies heavily on Boeing components. Data shows 29 Chinese airlines operate about 1,715 Boeing aircraft, with 144 more awaiting delivery. Major carriers such as Air China, China Southern, and China Eastern collectively have hundreds of Boeing planes but are also expanding orders for China’s domestically produced COMAC C919.

Any restrictions could also affect CFM International, the U.S.-French joint venture supplying engines for Boeing’s 737 MAX, 777, and 787 models. While Boeing continues negotiations to sell up to 500 aircraft to China, its dependence on the Chinese market has declined in recent years as geopolitical tensions and trade rivalries reshape global aerospace dynamics.
